Founded over a thousand years ago, Trondheim is the country's third city and former capital, built around the great Nidaros Cathedral on a bend of the river. Cobbled Bakklandet, the old wharves and a hilltop fortress make it compact and cyclable, with a lively café and music scene thanks to the university.
