Andøya runs along the exposed western shore of one of Vesterålen's outermost islands, with the Norwegian Sea on one side and steep, treeless mountains on the other. The road threads past wide beaches at Bleik, bird cliffs and peat bogs and the deep water just offshore makes it one of the most reliable whale-watching coasts in Europe. In summer the sun never sets here; in winter the same skies host the aurora.
