Three hours west into Telemark brings you to Rjukan, the UNESCO-listed valley town famous for its 'sun mirror' that beams daylight into the square in winter and the wartime heavy-water history. Above it rises Gaustatoppen, a near-perfect peak with a view said to span a sixth of Norway. A full, early-start day, or far better as an overnight.
